DSIT announced 6.6 million pounds to upgrade critical national infrastructure and facilities in areas including compound semiconductors, photonics and advanced packaging, funding 12 projects across the UK.
The single largest award went to the APRIL AI Hub at the University of Edinburgh to procure an 8-inch, 200keV electron-beam lithography tool, intended to enable what is described as the world''s first AI-driven electron-beam nanopatterning tool. Other recipients include the Centre for Secure Information Technologies and the Centre for Heterogeneous Integration.
The announcement was made at a ChipStart UK event by AI and Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan, and builds on the Government''s Digital and Technologies Sector Plan under the wider Industrial Strategy.
