Vishay Newport 250 million pound silicon carbide investment confirmed for South Wales

US chipmaker Vishay Intertechnology confirmed a 250 million pound investment in its Newport, Wales facility, the UK''s largest semiconductor manufacturing plant, to expand silicon carbide production.

Vishay Intertechnology — Newport, Wales — 27 March 2025

The investment, backed partly by the UK Government''s Automotive Transformation Fund alongside Vishay''s own capital, funds new silicon carbide production lines at the former Newport Wafer Fab site, now known as Vishay Newport.

Silicon carbide components support higher-voltage, higher-temperature applications such as electric vehicle drivetrains and wind turbine power electronics, offering faster charging and greater efficiency than silicon alternatives.

The investment is expected to directly support more than 500 highly skilled jobs, with additional indirect roles in the wider supply chain, and reinforces the site''s role within the compound semiconductor cluster in South Wales.
