There is no commercial wafer fabrication in London. Companies in the cluster use external foundries, and prototype device work is carried out at university cleanrooms in the capital or at national facilities elsewhere in the UK.
The London Centre for Nanotechnology, run jointly by UCL and Imperial College London, provides nanofabrication and characterisation capability at research scale, and is the main shared facility available to device-stage companies in the city.
UCL, Imperial College London and King's College London supply most of the cluster's research base and its spinout pipeline, with relevant work in nanotechnology, silicon quantum electronics, neuromorphic devices, MEMS and processable electronics.
The density of universities is the cluster's distinguishing feature: companies here typically originate in a research group and remain close to it, which explains why the recorded company base is weighted so heavily towards early-stage design and quantum businesses.
Venture investment is the dominant funding route for this cluster, and London's AI and quantum hardware companies have raised some of the larger UK semiconductor rounds of recent years. Because these companies are fabless, that capital funds engineering teams and foundry access rather than plant.
