Company profile

Kubos Semiconductors

Fabless company developing proprietary cubic gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology for LED and microLED applications, working with epitaxy and fabrication partners rather than operating its own fab.

Company overview

Kubos Semiconductors develops cubic-phase gallium nitride (GaN), a proprietary material technology intended to overcome the efficiency limits of conventional hexagonal GaN in green and red light emission. Its core technical work is epitaxial growth and material development: the company produces device-quality epitaxial layers of gallium, indium and aluminium nitride (Group III nitrides) and their alloys in the cubic crystal phase. Kubos operates on a fabless model, carrying out development through third-party academic and commercial facilities rather than its own wafer fab. The material platform is aimed at LEDs and microLEDs, including native red microLEDs and improved green efficiency for displays and AR/VR headsets, colour-mixed solid-state lighting, and microLEDs for high-speed optical interconnects and visible light communications. The company was formed in 2017 to commercialise technology first developed in a partnership between the University of Cambridge and Anvil Semiconductors. Its head office and registered address are at the Future Business Centre in Cambridge, and it has an additional operating and R&D location at Cardiff University's sbarc|spark building.
