Fabrication in this cluster is research and prototype scale. The University of Southampton's cleanroom complex, run as part of the Zepler Institute, provides lithography, etching, deposition and optical fibre fabrication, and is used by external companies as well as academic groups.
Industrial production is specialised rather than high volume. Detector and imaging manufacture in Southampton is the most substantial company-scale activity recorded in our index for this geography. We do not identify a volume silicon wafer fabrication plant in the region and none is claimed here.
The University of Southampton is the dominant research institution, with the Zepler Institute covering photonics, optoelectronics, nanoelectronics and optical fibre. The 2026 Government sector study identifies the Southampton geography specifically for silicon photonics and nanofabrication infrastructure rather than for a broad manufacturing base.
Other South East universities contribute in adjacent fields, but we have not identified comparable dedicated semiconductor fabrication facilities elsewhere in the region, so none are listed.
The 2023 National Semiconductor Strategy prioritised design, intellectual property, research and compound semiconductors, and photonics research infrastructure in this cluster has been funded largely through research council and university programmes rather than through a single regional manufacturing commitment.
